Flash Lite 3.1 Update for Nokia 5800

Recently as you know Nokia updated to the latest Flash Lite player on their 5800 XPressMusic device. This proved very popular with the user base with many thousands of downloads per day (that’s a great stat).

Since this was the first OTA update, and a new runtime, there were a few reported issues. They were with the security model and older content, softkey FSCommand and the Flash version string. I’m glad to say that Nokia have come through and another update is now available via the App. Update. application.

So get updating!

Additionally, you may also notice that the browser will trigger the update of the Flash player just like it does on the desktop. Unfortunately I didn’t take a screenshot, but it reported something like “Application update available”.

Great job Nokia!

It’s a real shame that the actual update process is hidden away under Applications folder under App Update … or at least on my 5800 … why are they putting it in there??!!! Should be one level up where users can easily find it!

Also the actual update menu stinks … clicking on the Flash Lite update toggles it’s update status, yet in order to actually update you need to LSK and then select “Start Update” …. not intuitive … but maybe that’s on purpose, so only savvy users update???!! Not sure … in any case, Nokia and said company of S60 can learn a lot from how Apple and Palm are doing updates … on the Palm Pre and webOS, it’s ONE single easily findable location that updates firmware AND applications ALL IN ONE PLACE. They really nailed it. When I got to updates it says “your phone is up to date” … when there are updates, the apps are listed and are easily selectable. Nokia really needs to step it up with the device user experience … 5800 is a nice first attempt … haven’t seen N97 yet, but most feedback I’ve heard isn’t exactly stellar. :(

I do like the fact that Nokia was proactive on updating the Player bugs though … congrats.

Before OTA this would have been a case where basically you’d (aka developers) be f’ed (with fragmentation) because maybe only 5% of people (a guess) with Nokia devices were actually doing firmware updates via Nokia PC Suite. :(

So congrats, on Nokia at least coming through with an OTA mechanism … they just need to clean it up across their devices.

This is because the sites uses as3 in Flash, currently that doesn’t work on a phone. We are working on it though for later in the year.

I’m a little bit confused, that I can’t normally install flash lite 3.1 on my phone. I created an 3.1 project, and now I wanted to test on 5800. The problem, that in hungarian localization of 5800 doesn’t contain software updateter. I installed flash lite distributed player, but it seems that doesnt support touch screen. Can I download the normal flash lite 3.1 on my phone? Maybe flash lite distrubuted player should have touch screen support?

Hi Jade, Because of some operator contracts Nokia have to remove the automatic update features, which is always annoying. Our Distributable Player was designed to focus on devices that didn’t have this feature, and so adding support for the 5800 and others will not happen.

You should speak to your operator to see if they have updates planned, and encourage them to do so.
