Adobe Mobile Packager reaches 100,000 users!

picture-21

Some great news on the mobile packager, we finally passed the 100,000 users mark yesterday as shown here on the magic “Dashboard”.  This is really good news and shows that we’ve managed to reach to more developers than ever with the tool.

Interestingly enough I’m also seeing recently spikes for the Flash Lite downloads too, which would indicate that applications are finally reaching users :-)

Note:  The orange line shows the attempted downloads, a few of which may be failures totalling 170,623 (which includes the 100,000 successful downloads).  My take on it is that these are Mac users cancelling after they discover that the Mobile Packager is Windows XP only :-(

thanks for sharing Mark. So if the 100k is just the number of successful downloads of the packaging tool, do you guys track the number of requests for downloading the FL player from Adobe’s server as part of the version checking code that’s in the device installable files?

    Hi Bill,

We do track the player downloads and currently it’s sitting at 150,000 downloads from applications. I think this is a pretty good number and it’s running at 1000+ downloads per day, which equates to applications entering the market.

    Hi Mark

Could you tell me when will FlashLite support H.264 on mobile devices or will Flash Player 10(actionscript 3.0 support?)take the place of FlashLite in the future?

PS,I am looking forward to seeing Flash Player on IPhone/IPod Touch.

    Thanks,

I got in contact with one of the supposed marketplace partners through the adobe mobile packager, thumbplay. According to them they no longer sell flash lite apps due to the low number of users with standalone flash lite capability. They were under the impression that no links for flash lite uploading even still existed. Why then is this still an active link in the packager? Since getjar is for free apps it makes Flash Lite seem to be a non-entity for American commercial app development.

    Hi Steve,

Thumbplay have indeed stopped working on distribution of Flash Lite applications on this product. As we understand it this is due to their new focus on music as a business rather than applications. As you know the Distributable Player enables users to download the FL3.1 Standalone player, and so a low number of users is merely indicative of unsuccessful marketing of the apps. In the US market where Thumbplay do business there are 8.01m+ compatible devices that can use this solution (ComScore July’09).

The link in the packager has not been removed because this field is not dynamic, we would have to rebuild the tool. At this time we’re not interested in doing that because we intend to transition the product to a partner. Details of that will be announced soon.
