Nokia ships 3m 5800 XPressMusic devices

By now you will probably have read that Nokia’s net income slipped by 90% in Q1.  This economy sucks, but the good news is that they shipped 92.3m devices anyway :-)

One of the highlights of the press release is the news that Nokia have shipped 2.4m 5800 XPressMusic devices in the past 3 months.  The device itself sports a smartphone OS and spec, but a mass market price tag.  We’re clearly going to see this device ship large volumes in 2009.  Of course this is great news for Flash developers because these 5th Edition devices are equipped with Flash Lite 3.0.

Well done to Nokia!

I think the 5800 is as nice (if not nicer) than the N95 when it first arrived … that being said, I’m looking forward to the N97 …

I don’t hear the “Taps” music playing for Nokia (just quite yet), but they clearly have work to do … esp if they plan to compete here in the US, and remain competitive elsewhere.

Agreed – The trick is the portfolio of devices, some OEMs target very select user categories and price points and this equates to risk “at the pump”. Nokia have a very wide portfolio and unrivalled global sales channels, and this is why they will retain the top spot. Saying that, nothing is certain, and other OEMs like Apple have clearly shown that you can enter the industry and make a difference.

In June I think we’ll see Apple create a portfolio of iPhones and begin to compete in the mass market space. It could be as simple as dropping the cost of a refreshed 2G model and adding an HD version for the top end.

Yep. SmartPhone Wars have already begun. :) This year is SmartPhone Wars II – “Attack of the Clones”. Not sure what next year is. :)

Apple just filed some patents, if you care to glance …

These are exactly what some community users were posting with photoshop mockups, so looks like they are going in that direction.

Yes, woot.com, and others often sell 2G’s for around $99 or so. So you’re last point I think is right on the mark.
