Adobe Flash Lite 3.1

For some time now we’ve been working on a new version of Flash Lite to answer the problem of web compatibility on devices. Flash Lite 3.0 has proved really successful, with the addition of Flash Video and performance increases our partners have been able to deliver new and exciting experiences on their devices.

Nokia are now shipping Flash Lite 3.0 on 9 S60 devices through a mixture of mandatory and firmware upgrades, and have released the first S40 device with Flash Lite 3.0, the 6300i.

Flash Lite 3.1 is a dot release because we are simply altering a few features, some new and some enhancements to ensure that web browsing is as good as possible. Here is a feature snapshot:

  • Improved Web Browsing, 91% of top 500 internet sites.
  • Flash 9 (AS2 only) support
  • Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode
  • H.264 support* / Improved video support (smoothing, seek)
  • Improved memory handling for images
  • MP3 Streaming support**
  • Linux Reference port

*Requires OEM porting to chipset.

**Requires licensing from MPEG.

Flash Lite 3.1 has already been released to our partners and you should expect to see it on devices by the end of the year.

If you have any questions then feel free to leave them in the comment field.

THe H.264 support is something that many developers asked about at the recent Flash Lite Code Camp for Nokia that I spoke at. Guys have been waiting for the common encoding for cross-platform delivery of video within the same format (FLV). Big improvement and very welcomed by many media companies I’m sure.

    Very nice!

    Also, a comment on:

    - Linux Reference port

Hmmm … begins with A, and ends with d?! Wonders.

    Hello Mark,

I also read somewhere about trusted folder issue is fixed in FL3.1. So, all old FL apps will work as they did in FL2.x.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

The trusted folder location is not under our control. When using FL3.1 as a browser plugin it is down to the OEM.

When we will have AS3 for mobile technology?

    Reply:
Actually we completed one of the key parts of AS3 for mobile last year, called Tamarin Tracing VM. This is stepping stone towards that goal.

The project is open source of course and in the future we will deliver Flash for mobile devices with AS3 support. Needless to say it isn’t going to happen this year.

Quantium, nice try. That falls under roadmap. I’d be surprised if Adobe would/could answer this (out in the open) …

However, I think a big hint is that the MaD team is now part of the “Platforms” group (from a recent press release).

Only a matter of time (IMHO).

    Hi,

Does flashlite 3.1 still support the Locale class, assuming that Actionscript 2.0 is used???

    Reply:

Hi mx.lang.Locale is an Actionscript 3 class, not Actionscript 2. You might be able to port the class backwards to AS2 if you really need to.

Mark, what makes you say it is AS 3.0? mx.lang.Locale is an AS 2.0 class not AS 3.0 (check the livedocs).

It would be great to know why it is not supported in FL 3.x as it has been around since MX 2004 (although I never myself used it for a project).

    Response:

Sorry, yes you are right; I must have looking at something else :-)

Feel free to guess why it’s not in FL3.x, my guess would be that it uses XML.

    Mark,

Do you know if flash lite 3.1 will support outgoing rtmp streaming from microphone of mobile devices? fl 3.0 dev. edition didn’t…

    Response:

Hi, FL3.1 will not support this.

Yes, Mark, it would be great to have a definitive answer on mx.lang.Locale, though.

… especially in the case where it is not being utilized across many target (mobile) devices … but yet in a controlled environment of 1 or a handful of target device(s). A place where both player memory, and CPU are known, can be tested against, and adjusted as needed.
